I found that your lessons specifically, were the ones I was able to most understand. With that being said, I found the Mathhelp site, saw that there were great reviews, and decided to give it a try.Going through the lessons, some concepts that I didn't understand in high school, somehow made plenty of sense this time around. I knew that there was a possibility that I would have to take additional courses before I was permitted to take the courses I need for my degree, and that would have pushed my graduation time back, depending on how I performed in those classes, first. Math hasn't always been my favorite subject, but as I'm getting closer to completing my degree, I could no longer avoid it. Your lessons were phenomenal, and I would be remiss if I didn't give proper feedback.Let me just start by saying I have been putting off (and dreading) taking the ALEKS Math Assessment for about 2 years now. Beyond the teachings the UI of the website and how smoothly everything worked was definitely a surprise for me. If I ever encounter a period in my life and schooling again where I need help on math I will surely come back to math help. There was material that I struggled with really bad in high school that I immediately was able to grasp during your lessons. For me my main issue in school was when the teacher would ask “ok does everyone understand it? Ok awesome moving on now” I was always not ready to move on because there was never enough repetition for me to really truly understand the material I was working on. I loved having the practice portion and always felt there was enough to practice on to really nail it down. Each video was at a very easy pace to follow it was clear and to the point. I don’t remember having any issues going through the lessons, and always felt more than ready moving to the practice portion, then the test portion of each lesson. I only got 2 questions incorrect on the math portion of the TABE test. I was more than satisfied with the math help program. I now feel fully prepared for the College Algebra class I'm taking next semester. The three instructors are great and teach each subject clearly and in a detailed manner.Whether your child is struggling in elementary school, or you are a college student who needs some extra help, is the solution to your needs.I aced my placement test. The videos really make it so easy to learn. The reinforcement of each concept is helpful. If you get one wrong, you are given a step-by-step explanation on how to get the correct answer. The video, followed by practice, followed by the questions were so easy to follow. I went through the entire course and took the final exam a few times as reinforcement. The courses are put together in an easy-to-follow manner and provide everything you will need to pass any math test. The course covers everything you will need to know. I came across many sites, but had the best setup, so I signed up. I needed to study and searched for online courses. To avoid prerequisite math classes, I needed to pass their placement test.It has been a “a few years” since I took a math class. I need to take College Algebra to obtain my degree. I am a 50+ who decided to go back to school late in life.

White Walkers outwardly resemble humans but differ greatly from them in other aspects. White Walkers have a mummified appearance with long wispy white hair. However, their plans were thwarted when Arya Stark killed the Night King at the Battle of Winterfell, resulting in the permanent extinction of the White Walkers and the end of the Great War. The ultimate goal of the legendary White Walkers was the end of every living thing in existence, which they planned to achieve by killing the Three-Eyed Raven and creating an endless winter to eclipse the known world. Despite repeated pleas for support from the Night's Watch, the rest of the Seven Kingdoms turned a blind eye to the return of the White Walkers as they remained embroiled in their own civil wars, believing the White Walkers to be purely mythological, much like giants and Children of the Forest, who have also faded into legend. The return of the White Walkers was confirmed during the great ranging undertaken by Lord Commander Jeor Mormont, and by an unprecedented attack by the wight army on the wildling settlement of Hardhome. The Night's Watch was founded to guard the Wall and the realms of men should the mysterious threat ever rise again.Īlthough the White Walkers have faded into legend over the centuries, disturbing reports began to reach the Night's Watch, just before the outbreak of the War of the Five Kings. With help from giants and the Children of the Forest, the Wall was raised to bar their return. In a conflict known as the Battle for the Dawn, the living won a decisive victory and pushed the White Walkers far north to the Lands of Always Winter. The people of Westeros soon realized they had to rally together or the White Walkers would kill them all. In the darkness and cold of the "Long Night," the White Walkers descended upon Westeros from the Far North, killing all in their path and reanimating the dead as wights to serve as mindless soldiers in their undead army. Įight thousand years before Robert's Rebellion, the longest winter in history fell on the entire world and lasted a whole generation. However, the White Walkers eventually broke free of the Children's control and became the most feared creatures in Westeros, posing a threat to all life. Born of powerful and untested magic, they were created to protect the Children of the Forest from the First Men, who had waged war on them ever since they had arrived from Essos. The White Walkers were thousands of years old, coming from the time preceding the Age of Heroes. However, most who live south of the Wall believed them to be nothing more than creatures of legend. After remaining hidden for thousands of years, they returned and were sighted by several sworn brothers of the Night's Watch and countless wildlings. The White Walkers were an ancient race of formerly-human ice creatures who came from the far north of Westeros. They swept through cities and kingdoms, riding their dead horses, hunting with their packs of pale spiders big as hounds." ― Old Nan " In that darkness the White Walkers came for the first time. But don't think that the Harraseeket is just another bed and breakfast. Just across the street and two blocks north of the Jameson Tavern, is one of the finest inns in New England, the Harraseeket Inn, owned by the same family that operates the Inn at Mystic (Connecticut). I've had some managers - big guys - who wouldn't stay here at night because of her." "Emily sure didn't help business that night. "But, within seconds, glasses started falling off other places on the shelf and crashing onto the floor," Stiles recalls. The bartender managed to catch a glass that fell off the shelf for no reason, to everyone's laughter and applause. Normally a benign spirit, one wintry Maine evening Emily showed her mischievous side. When she tried to warm herself in front of the fireplace, her nightgown caught on fire." She told us that her 4-year-old sister, Emily, had died in a tragic fire upstairs. "About 15 years ago a woman came into the restaurant," Stiles explains. One of my favorites is the Jameson Tavern, considered the birthplace of Maine. The Freeport Historical Society offers a free walking tour guide of the town, explaining the many houses and commercial buildings on the National Historic Register. History buffs, for example, can stand at the wide intersection of Main and Bow streets and imagine the horse-drawn sleds that made the turn toward the harbor, carrying the huge logs marked with the king's broad arrow that would serve as masts for England's sailing ships. They are not afraid to tackle larger prey either, as mantises have been observed feeding on snakes, frogs, and mice. The most common victim is the ruby-throated hummingbird, that on average weigh less than 4 grams, or 0.11 ounces. They have been observed next to hummingbird feeders waiting for a bird to feed on the nectar. The Chinese mantis is the largest mantis found in Maryland, up to 6” long, and has been observed and filmed catching and consuming hummingbirds. However, mantises are predators of a wide range of prey species and don’t discriminate between insect pests or beneficials. The three exotic mantises have become established through accidental or intentional introductions as an attempt at biocontrol. The Carolina mantis is found in the temperate regions of both North and Central America. The other three species are nonnative: the Chinese mantis ( Tenodera aridifolia), Japanese mantis ( Tenodera angustipennis), and the European mantis or praying mantis ( Mantis religiosa). There are four species of mantises found in Maryland with only one – the Carolina mantis, Stagmomantis carolina– being native. Native Carolina mantis ooetheca (egg case). The eggs overwinter in the capsule until spring. Eggs are laid by the female in a froth that hardens into a Styrofoam-like capsule called an ootheca that insulates and protects the eggs. This does not always happen, with studies suggesting it happens less than 30% of the time outside of the lab environment. Mantises are known for sexual cannibalism where the female will kill and eat the male after copulation. Mantises live for about a year in cooler climates and mate and lay eggs before they die. Mantises are not picky eaters, capturing and eating anything they can subdue, including other mantises. Well camouflaged for their habitat, mantises are ambush predators, meaning they stalk and then lie in wait for their prey to get close then grab the prey with their powerful forelegs, often at a speed that’s hard to observe with the naked eye. Their habit of keeping their forelegs tucked close to their bodies have led to the observation that they are praying, with ‘praying mantis’ being a common name for all within the order. Most have wings, but all are distinguished by large spiked forelegs that are very powerful and used to catch and grip prey. They have large triangular heads that can move 180 degrees on a flexible neck, and two large bulging eyes, plus three smaller ones in between the large eyes. Mantises are variable in size, ranging from about 2” up to 6” in length. Mantises are an order of insects with over 2,400 species worldwide found the temperate and tropical regions of the world. Hundreds of fans – including myself – turned out to watch the film under the stars, in a setting that felt as romantic as the story itself. In July of this year, Amélie finally did play at Cannes, in a special anniversary screening on the beach. In an amusing twist, Amélie was rejected when it was submitted to the Cannes Film Festival, with Jeunet reporting that programmer Gilles Jacob called the film "uninteresting". My sartorial success was minimal, but I fully credit Amélie with introducing me to French cinema, as it did countless others. I visited it myself as a teenager obsessed with the film, aiming to emulate Audrey Tautou's chic appearance with my floral blouses and blunt-cut fringe. Café des 2 Moulins, at the intersection of Rue Lepic and Rue Cauchois in Montmartre, became a popular destination for tourists and fans of the film, with locals capitalising on the new-found attention. Writing for LA Weekly, Manohla Dargis called the film "a frenetic bore that insists on its audience's adoration while making no demands upon their intelligence", while Phil Hoad's anniversary piece for The Guardian in 2011 stated: "I still find Audrey Tautou's boulevard busybody simpering to the point of psychosis." But Amélie would likely not take their words to heart – or perhaps cause a little light carnage by way of revenge, as she does upon the bullying greengrocer who harangues his meek assistant.Ĭertainly the film had a marked impact upon the neighbourhood in which it is set. Of course, there are those who haven't fallen for Amélie's charms. It's a movie that will make me cry based on kindness as opposed to sadness," he told the New York Times. Amélie just happens to be Fuller's favourite film: "All the things I love are represented in that movie. US network ABC was looking for a programme with a similar sense of whimsy and sparkle, and Fuller delivered an offbeat romance about a baker with the power to bring dead people back to life. The US TV writer and producer Bryan Fuller's 2007 show Pushing Daisies was inspired directly by Amélie. It feels even more poignant in light of the global pandemic, which has forced people inside their homes for over a year, keeping families and friends apart and robbing so many of the joy of human connection. This recognisable sense of isolation will be familiar to anyone who has spent time living in a city, surrounded by people yet unable to forge relationships. Yet when home alone in her apartment, Amélie's world seems quieter her loneliness more apparent. While the world is often a harsh place, Jeunet and his creative team dare to imagine a kinder, gentler reality, where the dreamers and artists of the world aren't yet jaded by external forces. This is not Paris in reality this is the city of dreamers, a heightened reality in which the potential for magic lingers down every boulevard and in every metro station. This feeling of romance and everyday magic is underscored by the instrumental compositions of Yann Tiersen, which Jeunet employs to great effect to highlight Amélie's capricious moods. Shots of the city resemble the French capital as seen on postcards, while the unmistakable rich reds and yellows of the film's colour palette were heightened in post-production to reflect Amélie's joie de vivre. We follow Amélie on her adventures around Paris with pleasure Bruno Delbonnel's vivid cinematography presents the city as beautiful but unmistakably lively, a fairground ride in constant motion. Just what is it that makes Amélie – or to give the film its proper title, The Fabulous Destiny of Amélie Poulain – so fabulous, after all this time? It's no wonder that the film captured the hearts of audiences upon release, but two decades later its rich legacy continues, having inspired a musical, and even the name of a newly-discovered species of frog. Jeunet’s unconventional romantic comedy sees Amélie – played wonderfully by Audrey Tautou – encounter a series of fellow oddballs, and provides glimpses into the curious lives of others while celebrating the unique charm of France's capital city. Yet she often feels isolated, and having had a lonely childhood, seeks out connection with those around her. Amélie Poulain, the title character of Jean-Pierre Jeunet's fourth feature film, is a waitress with a big imagination, who finds herself drawn to simple pleasures in life, such as taking in a film on a Friday night or cracking the surface of a crème brûlée with a spoon. Twenty years ago, a petite heroine from the Montmartre district of Paris took the world by storm. |
